Anne Demarais

Anne’s Legs

intaglio print, 1990; 20″h x 20″w; Courtesy of the Estate of Susan Kiley Colavita

As a high school business teacher in upstate New York, Anne Marie Mahland met and married Joseph Demarais, the music teacher at the same school. They moved to Florida where Joe Demarais became convinced to get a graduate degree and pursue a career in sculpture and printmaking rather than jazz music. In the early ‘60s, Demarais began to teach printmaking at Trenton State College while Anne taught business courses at Frenchtown High School and managed the printmaking business. Joe’s shocking early death inspired Anne to create Demarais Studio to complete editions of Joe’s work in the early ‘70s. She also did her own intaglio-relief prints and concentrated on photography with special attention to the Cibachrome printing of nudes. Printing in her home continued for about 20 years while Anne became active in Mercer County Arts and Lawrence Township environmental concerns.
