Helmut Kunst was born in Riga, Latvia and came to the USA in 1949. He attended art and advertising schools in Trenton and Philadelphia. For many years he worked for ad agencies between New York and Philadelphia as a designer, illustrator and art director and has won several awards. The medium he uses is gouache and he paints rural landscapes. In the late 1990s he and his wife moved to northeast Pennsylvania, where they ran a successful art gallery and framing business. Kunst continued painting landscapes, inspired by the rolling hills and farms found in the surrounding area.
