oil on linen, 2020; 40″h x 30″w

Epstein is a painter living in Brooklyn, NY and teaching at Suffolk County Community College on Long Island, NY. He earned an MFA in painting from Brooklyn College, studying with Lennart Anderson, Lois Dodd, and John Walker; and received a BA in studio art from Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA. Soon after college and returning to his family home in Lawrenceville, NJ, Epstein became an early member of the Trenton Artists Workshop Association and was selected for a solo show at Ellarslie through TAWA’s 16 Artist Series, beginning a long and happy association with the museum. Subsequently he had two more solo shows, a three-person group show, was juried into some Ellarslie Opens, and invited to participate in Pushing40. Most recently Epstein’s work was included in the four-person exhibition, Painting the Moon and Beyond, curated by Ilene Dube. Epstein currently divides his time between New York City and rural Maine and is represented by the Caldbeck Gallery in Rockland, ME.

“My paintings explore where the natural and made landscapes overlap, often at night. It is a space where moments of natural beauty are interrupted by human intrusions, where disruption and harmony coexist, sometimes uneasily. It’s that balance that I want to describe.”
