“Usually, an image is arrived at after a prolonged struggle which can take months but more often years. There’s a fine line in making a statement clear and simple without the painting looking slick. I often love how a painting looks in its very early stages when the white of the primer still shines through but my conscience or whatever it is that drives me to paint, won’t allow it. There has to be enough information on the surface to engage in a dialogue with the painting. It slowly tells me what it wants to be when it grows up and no longer needs me to force my will on it. At that point, it’s finished.”
