“Studies in topography, such as surface textures and patterns abound in nature and can provide a sense of space and of place. The angle of the light, presence of shadows, and even reflections of the sky reveal details that might otherwise not be seen. I am particularly drawn to ice, water, floral, and most recently tree bark as subjects. Plant surface topographies, such as bark, are virtually limitless, and they may change seasonally, as well as with the age of the plant. Bark patterns are determined by internal features: how the tree grows, by adding cells, in diameter and circumference, and how the bark, the outermost layer, responds to stretching.”
